Farm Legal & Financial Clinics

The free clinics provide farmers and ranchers an opportunity to meet privately with experienced
agriculture debt financial counselors, farm law attorneys, and mediators to explore the options
that best fit their individual situations. They are held monthly in Ainsworth, Alliance, Beatrice,
Grand Island, Lexington, Norfolk, and North Platte. To make an appointment for a clinic, call

Nebraska Farm Mediation Service

Farm mediation provides a means for agricultural producers to sort through disputes with
creditors or USDA agencies with the aid of a neutral third party called a mediator. The mediator
does not decide the issues for the parties but encourages them to reach mutually agreeable
solutions. Farm borrowers who apply for mediation are offered no-cost financial counseling and
analysis. Farm mediation can be used as a proactive approach to resolve issues while the
borrower and lenders still have multiple options, as well as in situations where the lender is
threatening foreclosure and the borrower is contemplating bankruptcy.

The Nebraska Counseling, Outreach and Mental Health Therapy, COMHT (pronounced "comet")
project offers no-cost vouchers for confidential mental health services for persons affected by the
rural crises. Call for vouchers and information. Funding is provided by the State of Nebraska.

Community Action agencies CAA's provide access to the opportunities people need to improve
their lives, to help themselves and to help each other. Depending on location, CAA's may be
able to provide food, clothing, health, shelter and emergency aid to individuals, as well as case
management, job training, utility assistance or transportation.

A health insurance policy is available through the state Children's Health Insurance Program for
children under the age of 18. Eligibility is based on family income and citizenship. Health
insurance can help insure your financial security and quality medical attention in case of an injury
or illness.
Prescription Assistance
Information and help is available for people who have no insurance and can't afford to purchase
their medicines.
Weathering Tough Times
The University of Nebraska, Kansas State University and Iowa State University teamed together
to provide this training for people who are working with farm, ranch and rural families.
Educators and service providers from both the public and private sector may find this
information valuable. The training is designed to provide an overview of the issues facing those
depending on income from farming, ranching and businesses closely tied to the rural economy,
and provide options for helping these individuals cope with the difficult times.
Workforce Development
Offices across the state provide assistance in finding full- or part-time employment. Short-term
training programs are available for dislocated farmers who meet eligibility guidelines. Call your
